The power is for the people, not for any assembly/council.I’ve seen this stencil on walls in downtown Cairo, Dokki, and other neighborhoods, but this particular graffito is near the Mahmoud Mukhtar Museum on Tahrir Street in Zamalek. The scene depicted here is of Field Marshal Mohammed Hussein Tantawi (or perhaps just a military officer) and a man with a long beard playing a game of chess. It’s difficult to see in the photo, but there’s a revolutionary/activist in the shape of a pawn lying on its side bleeding next to the chess board (here is a clearer version of the stencil). In the phrase, assembly or council refers to the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF), as well as the Shura Council and People’s Assembly of the Egyptian Parliament. I imagine the man with the beard is supposed to be a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. The graffiti artist seems to be accusing the Brotherhood and the SCAF of treating Egypt as if it were a game of chess - competing (and sometimes conspiring together) in order to preserve their own economic and political influences and in the process of doing so, treating the Egyptian people as mere ‘pawns’ and ignoring their demands.
